According to the present forecast, Severe Typhoon Podul will enter within 800 kilometres of Hong Kong in the next couple of hours. The Observatory will issue the Standby Signal, No. 1 at 8:40 a.m. Under the influence of the outer subsiding air of Podul, it will be very hot during the day over Guangdong and heat triggered showers will also affect the region later today. With Podul making landfall over the vicinity of eastern Guangdong to southern Fujian tomorrow (14 August), its associated rain band will be rather close to the coast of Guangdong. Locally, there will be heavy squally showers and thunderstorms tomorrow. There will be swells.
Depending on the distance between Podul and the Pearl River Estuary, its intensity and the change in local winds, the Observatory will assess the need of issuing higher Tropical Cyclone Warning Signals later today to early tomorrow.
