Intensity of UV radiation : low According to the present forecast, Wipha will enter within 800 kilometres of Hong Kong around midnight tonight. The Observatory will issue the Standby Signal, No. 1 by then. Wipha is expected to intensify progressively and edge closer to the vicinity of the Pearl River Estuary tomorrow and on Sunday (19 and 20 July). Winds will strengthen gradually later tomorrow. Showers will be heavy with squally thunderstorms. The Observatory will consider issuing the Strong Wind Signal, No. 3 during the day tomorrow.
Wipha will be rather close to the vicinity of the Pearl River Estuary on Sunday (20 July), and expected to skirt around 50 kilometers from Hong Kong. The weather will be adverse on Sunday with heavy squally showers and thunderstorms. Seas will be very rough with swells. Members of the public are advised to stay away from the shoreline and not to engage in water sports.
Depending on the distance between Wipha and the Pearl River Estuary, the intensity of Wipha and the change in local winds, the Observatory will assess the need of issuing higher tropical cyclone warning signals at first on Sunday. Members of the public should pay close attention to the latest weather information from the Observatory. Please be reminded that:The Thunderstorm Warning has been issued. It will remain effective until 5:00 p.m. today. A few thunderstorms are expected to occur over Hong Kong.The Special Announcement of Flooding in Northern New Territories has been issued. Intensity of UV radiation : low Localised Heavy Rain Advisory: Rain is particularly heavy in Yuen Long District and Tsuen Wan District which may cause serious flooding. In particular, severe rainstorm is affecting Yuen Long District with more than 100 millimetres of hourly rainfall fallen or expected to fall; heavy rain is affecting Tsuen Wan District with more than 70 millimetres of hourly rainfall fallen or expected to fall. According to the present forecast, Wipha will enter within 800 kilometres of Hong Kong tonight to early tomorrow (19 July). The Observatory will issue the Standby Signal, No. 1 by then. Wipha is expected to intensify progressively and edge closer to the vicinity of the Pearl River Estuary and the coast of western Guangdong afterwards. Under the influence of its outer subsiding air, the weather will still be very hot in Hong Kong at first tomorrow. Winds will strengthen gradually later tomorrow. The weather will worsen with heavy squally showers and thunderstorms on Sunday. Seas will be very rough with swells. Members of the public are advised to stay away from the shoreline and not to engage in water sports. The Observatory will consider issuing the Strong Wind Signal, No. 3 during the day tomorrow.
