Intensity of UV radiation : moderate Tropical Cyclone Fengshen now located near the Philippines will enter within 800 kilometres of Hong Kong later tomorrow (19 October). Meanwhile, pressure is rising over central China. An intense northeast monsoon is expected to reach Guangdong tomorrow and local winds will strengthen gradually. Since the weather over the coast of southern China will be mainly dominated by the monsoon at that time, the Observatory will consider issuing the Strong Monsoon Signal depending on the changes in local wind strength.
With Fengshen edging closer to the coast of Guangdong later on Monday (20 October), the Observatory will consider issuing the Strong Wind Signal, No. 3 directly, to replace the Strong Monsoon Signal by then without issuing the Standby Signal, No. 1. According to the present forecast, Fengshen will be closest to Hong Kong on Tuesday (21 October). Depending on the intensity of Fengshen, the distance of the gale winds from Hong Kong and the change in local wind conditions, the Observatory will assess the need for issuing higher tropical cyclone warning signals by then. Fengshen will also start to turn southwestwards gradually under the influence of the monsoon, but there are uncertainties in the location of the turn.
Under the combined effect of Fengshen and the monsoon, it will be persistently windy and will become cloudy with rain early to midweek next week. Temperatures will fall appreciably to around 20 degrees in the urban areas midweek next week, and a couple of degrees lower in the New Territories. Seas will be rough with swells. For a few consecutive nights next week, flooding may occur over some low-lying coastal areas during the high tides. Members of the public should take note of the latest weather information from the Observatory.
