A free Public Health Course, CMED6231 ‘Emergency Medicine for Disaster and Humanitarian Crises Responders’ (18 Jul – 14 Aug 2018), organised by the School of Public Health of The University of Hong Kong (HKU) and supported by the Hong Kong Jockey Club Disaster Preparedness and Response Institute (HKJCDPRI) is now open for application.

This course will introduce the basic concepts of health and public health and core principles for public health practice. These core concepts and principles are fundamental for developing and implementing health interventions in health emergency and disaster risk management (Health- EDRM) at global level. In this course, public health practice is categorised into three major domains: health protection, health promotion and health service provision. Each domain will be explained in lecture 3, 4 & 5 with relevant principles, models and theories to help understand how public health interventions and policies are developed and implemented.

“Adapting international norms and lessons learnt to meet local needs” is the motto of the Hong Kong Jockey Club Disaster Preparedness and Response Institute (HKJCDPRI). On 19-30 November 2018, the two-week overseas training fellowship programme “A Bespoke Integrated Resilience Skills Course” organised by the HKJCDPRI in collaboration with the Emergency Planning College took place in York, the United Kingdom (UK). The course was designed by the HKJCDPRI and the Emergency Planning College with the expert advice of the Major Incidents Bureau of the Hong Kong Police Force.

The HKJCDPRI launched its annual multi-media competition, the 2018 Photo Essay Contest, supported by Hong Kong Documentary Initiative and Hong Kong Press Photographers Association, from 1 – 31 October 2018. Under the theme “I Was There”, we encouraged participants to revisit and collect fragments of disasters, so as to remind ourselves such upheavals are so close to our daily lives.

Health system strengthening can promote resilience and efficient recovery in disasters. This course will introduce important frameworks and responses of the health system that guide managing disaster. Participants will learn about the building blocks and key components of the health system. There is technical training on the impact of health system in the preparedness, response and recovery phases of the Disaster Risk Management (DRM) cycle. We will demonstrate the impact, response and effort of health system by drawing from actual worldwide experience of large-scale disasters in different economic and political systems.
