The area of low pressure over the central and northern parts of the South China Sea has intensified into a tropical depression. The Observatory will issue the Standby Signal, No. 1 at 10:20 p.m. tonight. According to the present forecast, the tropical depression will move in the general direction of the vicinity of Hainan Island in the next couple of days. Under the combined effect of the tropical depression and the ridge of high pressure over southeastern China, local winds will strengthen tomorrow (17 August). Depending on its distance from Hong Kong and the change in local winds, the Observatory will assess the need of issuing higher Tropical Cyclone Warning Signals later tomorrow morning. With the associated rainbands of the tropical depression edging closer to the coastal areas of Guangdong, there will be occasional squally showers and thunderstorms over Hong Kong tomorrow, and showers will be heavier at times. Seas will be rough with swells. Members of the public are advised to stay away from the shoreline and not to engage in water sports. There will still be squally showers on Monday (18 August) and Tuesday (19 August), and showers will be heavy at times. Members of the public should take note of the latest weather information and warning bulletins issued by the Observatory, and check road conditions before departing.
