「初小防災暨創意工作坊」已經開展

為了提高小朋友的防災意識，香港賽馬會災難防護應變教研中心特別設計了「防災達人」卡通角色和「防災小將」主題曲，期望每位小朋友都可以從小培養防災意識，並建立安全社區。「防災達人」的四個特質包括「通風報信」天線、「一眼關七」眼仔、「耳聽八方」耳仔以及「膽大心細」心心。「防災達人」懂得認識危機，因應不同類型的危機做好計劃，及學懂應變方法，便能做到「防災」和「應變」。

為了提高小朋友的防災意識，香港賽馬會災難防護應變教研中心特別設計了「防災達人」卡通角色和「防災小將」主題曲，期望每位小朋友都可以從小培養防災意識，並建立安全社區。

於六月中旬開始，教研中心連同「防災達人」創作總監伍尚豪先生共同舉辦六場「初小防災暨創意工作坊」，以「防災達人」為主軸，利用互動問答環節、動畫及繪畫的形式向初小學生灌輸防災教育，當中提及何為災難、面對不同災難時的應對方法、如何準備災難逃生包等等，引發學童思考在緊急情況應如何自處，從中加強學童的應變能力。

在工作坊的後半部分，伍先生更示範如何繪畫「防災達人」和填色技巧，學生表現好奇，紛紛舉手表示想試畫！其後，當小朋友收到「防災達人」填色紙時，大家都非常雀躍地填色，創作自己獨有的「防災達人」！

教研中心在WADEM 2019大會中的參與

Two representatives of the Hong Kong Jockey Club Disaster Preparedness and Response Institute (HKJCDPRI) participated in the World Association for Disaster and Emergency Medicine (WADEM) Congress held on 7 – 10 May 2019. The WADEM Congress is a biennial international event which provides an interactive and stimulating environment for participants to share research and findings, exchange ideas and best practices and network with peers.

With a theme of “The Future”, the Congress 2019 held in Brisbane, Australia included over 30 tracks with high profile speakers, as well as a wide range of interactive sessions for participants to share experience and knowledge gained from their work. During the congress, the HKJCDPRI representatives shared two projects with congress participants at the poster presentation and oral presentation sessions.

During the poster presentation session, Ms Angel Ng, Senior Manager of the HKJCDPRI, presented a study entitled “Mental Health Impacts on People Living in Subdivided Flats in Hong Kong”. In collaboration with the Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui (HKSKH) Lady MacLehose Centre, the study was a mixed quantitative and qualitative study to investigate the impact of poor living conditions such as fire risks, environmental health risks and other chronic health issues in subdivided flats on the residents.

During the oral presentation session, Ms Tiffany Yeung, Manager (Professional Development) of the HKJCDPRI, shared with the audience a survey conducted by the HKJCDPRI entitled “Typhoon Preparedness Measures of the Hong Kong Public for Typhoon Mangkhut” and its associated survey findings. The aim of the study was to understand the general Hong Kong public’s awareness and views on the super typhoon that slammed Hong Kong in September 2018 and precautionary measures carried out. The public’s information seeking behaviours and self-reported confidence in their knowledge on typhoon preparedness was also investigated. Since 2015, the HKJCDPRI has actively participated in the WADEM Congress by sharing of experience and exchange of ideas with the congress participants. The knowledge and insights gained for the HKJCDPRI’s learning for continuous improvement of work is invaluable.

Annual Conference on Disaster Preparedness and Response 2019

The Annual Conference on Disaster Preparedness and Response 2019 to be held on 29 June 2019 (Sat) at the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine Jockey Club Building is the fourth of this series of conferences, following previous successful events in with the themes of From Community to Emergency Room in 2015; Building a Resilient Health System in 2016 and Emerging Challenges and Opportunities Ahead in 2018.

Today, 55% of the world’s population lives in urban cities and the figure will surge to 68% by 2050 according to the United Nations. Many metropolitan cities are still growing and changing rapidly, creating more natural and technological threats complicated by the structural, social, energy and environmental development. If defenses fail, the human and economic toll can be enormous. The emerging disaster risks should not be the concern for disaster management practitioners only but for all industries that might be affected by the impact of catastrophes. It is imperative that we embrace the concept of resilience and adapt our management practice to meet the demands of an environment with evolving threats in a multi-sectoral and collaborative approach.

With a theme of “Reduce Risks · Build Resilience”, the 2019 annual conference aims to provide a platform for knowledge sharing, information exchange, discussion of latest developments, networking and partnership building across different sectors of players in disaster risk reduction work. The conference will bring together experts and practitioners, government officials, social services, businesses and researchers to share experience and ideas on reducing risks and building resilience!
