Intensity of UV radiation : low The area of low pressure over the northeastern part of the South China Sea has intensified into a tropical depression. The Observatory will issue the Standby Signal, No. 1 at 12:20 p.m. today. According to the present forecast, the circulation of the tropical depression will be relatively small. It will be slow-moving and maintain a distance of over 400 kilometres from Hong Kong for the rest of today. The Standby Signal, No. 1 will remain in force for most of today. The tropical cyclone is expected to intensify gradually. It is more likely to linger over the northeastern part of the South China Sea over the weekend and turn northwards in the general direction of the vicinity of Taiwan Strait to the coast of eastern Guangdong. However, there are still uncertainties in its movement. Depending on the distance between the associated strong winds and the Pearl River Estuary as well as its intensification, the Observatory will assess the need of issuing higher tropical cyclone warning signals. Locally, there will be swells in the next couple of days. Members of the public should stay away from the shoreline and not engage in water sports, and take note of the latest weather information from the Observatory. Please be reminded that:The Very Hot Weather Warning is now in force. Prolonged heat alert! Please drink sufficient water. If feeling unwell, take rest or seek help immediately.
