19th World Congress on Disaster and Emergency Medicine (WCDEM) was held in Cape Town, South Africa on 21-24 April 2015. WCDEM is a bi-annual congress providing opportunities to share disaster and emergency medicine experiences and network with colleagues from healthcare and non-governmental sectors. The theme of the conference this year was “Creating Capacity, Building Resilience”, emphasizing the impact of humanitarian disaster to health systems, prehospital and crisis response. During the 3.5-days conference, six plenary sessions and more than 20 related topics were discussed, including disaster risk management, resilience building, disaster training and foreign medical teams.

Hong Kong has suffered its fair share of extreme weather owing to climate change globally. Yet, most of the citizens are not aware of how Hong Kong might prepare for disasters. To enhance awareness and understanding of general public on various hazards and their related risks to Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Jockey Club Disaster Preparedness and Response Institute will launch a series of public education campaigns jointly with community-based organisations, hoping to raise the community’s preparedness of and resilience to natural and manmade disasters.

Following the launch in August this year, the office of the Hong Kong Jockey Club Disaster Preparedness and Response Institute (HKJCDPRI) has started its operation officially on 1 November 2014. The headquarters of the HKJCDPRI is located on the 9/F of the Academy Building of the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine. A simple but warm ceremony was held on 31 October to commence its operation with the participation of representatives from the Hong Kong Jockey Club, Specialty Colleges, key collaborators and supporting organisations of HKJCDPRI.   Roast pig-cutting ceremony held at the house-warming ceremony of the HKJCDPRI office.

The Hong Kong Jockey Club Disaster Preparedness and Response Institute (HKJCDPRI) was officially launched on 20 August 2014, in the face of a global upturn in the frequency and severity of disasters, as an operational centre of excellence in disaster preparedness and response in Hong Kong. Over 300 guests gathered at Hong Kong Academy of Medicine at the launch to celebrate the establishment of HKJCDPRI under the generous funding support of HK$271 million over five years by the Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC) Charities Trust.

  CALL FOR APPLICATION   About HKJCDPRI Research Grant The Hong Kong Jockey Club Disaster Preparedness and Response Institute (HKJCDPRI) Research Grant aims to strengthen community disaster resilience by supporting multidisciplinary research. The grant provides financial support to research projects that potentially benefit the development of evidence-based planning, policies and interventions for effective disaster management in Hong Kong.

With the support of Hong Kong Jockey Club Disaster Preparedness and Response Institute, the Emergency Medicine Unit of The University of Hong Kong developed a course on "Ultrasound-assisted Clinical Skills for Disasters". This course was geared towards the goal of updating participants with the latest ultrasound knowledge in a field setting, and a repertoire of skills regarding the contemporary practice of point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) on trauma casualties in disaster management.   The first cohort of students of the “Ultrasound-assisted Clinical Skills for Disasters”course graduated on 24 July 2016. This cohort included 22 medical students and 10 practicing emergency physicians.

The battle has begun! "Disaster Commander Wanted!” is the theme of the "Multi-media Competition 2016", which is a part of the annual “Community Campaign on Disaster Resilience”. The drawing contest, targeting the primary school students, aims to engage participants in an interactive creative process to raise awareness on disaster risk reduction.   The annual campaign was organized by the Hong Kong Jockey Club Disaster Preparedness and Response Institute (HKJCDPRI) as a continuous effort to enhance community resilience through a range of public education activities. We envisage an enhanced level of vigilance and knowledge among the general public along the way.

The Fundamental Disaster Response Course (FDRC) 2016 , organised by the Disaster Medicine Subcommittee of the Hong Kong College of Emergency Medicine and supported by the Hong Kong Jockey Club Disaster Preparedness and Response Institute, was completed with 18 participants from the period of March - July 2016. The course consisted of five full day sessions (eight hours per session, 40 hours in total). Participants included emergency medicine physicians and nurses, and ambulance officers from the Hong Kong Fire Service Department.
