Hong Kong is a dynamic high-income city with robust disaster preparedness. Within government and non-government agencies, contingency plans and disaster drills have been carefully considered and rehearsed. However, a significant gap exists in community awareness and engagement in disaster preparedness activities. Based on one of the findings of the Scoping Study, there is a broad recognition among agency leaders and the community of the need to improve community engagement in all aspects of disaster management. This policy brief provides insights on how to lay a foundation of community engagement in Hong Kong.

A ten-member delegation from Hong Kong Academy of Medicine (HKAM) paid a visit to Sichuan and attended work meetings with Health and Family Planning Commission of Sichuan Province, Chinese National Emergency Medical Team members from Sichuan Provincial People’s Hospital and West China Hospital of Sichuan University, and Institute for Disaster Management and Reconstruction (IDMR).

The Civil Aid Service (CAS) has been organizing annual "Mountaineering Safety Promotion Day " since 2005, to raise public awareness of mountaineering safety. In 2016, HKJCDPRI was invited to join force in this meaningful event.   With contributions from 21 government departments, mountaineering organisations and medical groups, the "Mountaineering Safety Promotion Day 2016” was successfully concluded on 6 November 2016 at Kowloon Park, Tsim Sha Tsui. Ms Eva Lam (back row, third from right), Director of HKJCDPRI, attended the opening ceremony of Mountaineering Safety Promotion Day 2016.

Tai O is a low-lying area where serious flooding often occurs when typhoons and rainstorms strike.  When Typhoon Hagupit hit Hong Kong in 2008, seawater intrusion significantly affected Tai O - water level rose in minutes and once became one-storey high, causing damage to furniture and properties.
