Hong Kong has suffered its fair share of extreme disaster events owing to the climate change. Yet, most of us are unaware how prepared Hong Kong is for the impacts of disasters.
To enhance the awareness and understanding of general public on various hazards and their related risks to Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Jockey Club Disaster Preparedness and Response Institute (HKJCDPRI) will launch a series of public education campaigns jointly with different community-based organisations, hoping to raise the community’s preparedness and resilience of natural and manmade disasters.

In collaboration with the University of Manchester Humanitarian and Conflict Response Institute, Department of Health and Hospital Authority, HKJCDPRI organised a workshop titled "Mobile Surge Capacity Teams for Medical and Public Health Emergencies" on 7 October 2016.
The workshop aimed to provide healthcare professionals with knowledge and to share experience on mobile surge team planning for medical and public health emergencies. The workshop examined the current practices of mobile medical team mobilisation internationally and locally. Topics discussed included:
- Understanding Surge Capacity and Mobile Surge Capacity
- Sharing of Current Practices in Hong Kong and United Kingdom
- Staffing Strategies

The workshop was held as a pre-conference workshop for the Annual Conference on Disaster Preparedness and Response 2016. In total 51 participants participated in the workshop. The workshop deepened the participants’ understanding on the topics. The sharing of practices and discussion of experience enabled participants to explore the best practices challenges of developing mobile surge teams that are practical.

To increase public awareness on disaster preparedness and response, the Hong Kong Jockey Club Disaster Preparedness and Response Institute (HKJCDPRI) launched a drawing competition for primary school students in Hong Kong in 2016, which attracted a total of 333 submissions. Participating students had demonstrated both their creativity, and knowledge on individual preparedness for disaster risks in Hong Kong.
To increase public awareness on disaster preparedness and response, the Hong Kong Jockey Club Disaster Preparedness and Response Institute (HKJCDPRI) launched a drawing competition for primary school students in Hong Kong in 2016, which attracted a total of 333 submissions. Participating students had demonstrated both their creativity, and knowledge on individual preparedness for disaster risks in Hong Kong.
An award presentation ceremony cum community educational event – “Disaster Preparedness and Response Challenges” was held in Lok Fu Plaza on 2 October 2016 to close the competition. On top of that, the Fire Services Department, Civil Aid Services, two project partners of HKJCDPRI - ‘The Silence’ and ‘Amity Mutual Support Society’ had set-up interactive educational activities and game booths to disseminate disaster preparedness message to the general public.
Winners of the drawing competition, together with other outstanding “Disaster Preparedness Ambassadors” attended the ceremony with their families and friends.

Partnering with the Hong Kong Automotive Association, HKJCDPRI organised a training "Motorsport Medicine Incident Management Course" for medical incident first responders, involved in the 2016 FIA Formula E Hong Kong Station race event held on 8 and 9 October 2016. Two identical courses were held on 24 September and 1 October 2016 with a participation of 80 medical emergency first responders.
Partnering with the Hong Kong Automotive Association, HKJCDPRI organised a training "Motorsport Medicine Incident Management Course" for medical incident first responders, involved in the 2016 FIA Formula E Hong Kong Station race event held on 8 and 9 October 2016. Two identical courses were held on 24 September and 1 October 2016 with a participation of 80 medical emergency first responders.
The course covered four main areas from trackside care, ambulance care, extended medical care in motorsport medical centre, to command and coordination. Field medical procedures simulation and XVR game-based learning on crisis leadership, decision-making, and communication skills were carried out during the course. Facilities at the Hong Kong Jockey Club Innovative Learning Centre for Medicine (HKJCILCM) including the clinical simulation equipment and eXtreme Virtual Reality (XVR) were used during the training. The Virtual Reality Team of the HKJCILCM also provided support for the scenario design on XVR and during the training .
Due to the complexity of the circuit and relative lack of experience in motor racing medical support in Hong Kong, this pre-event simulation course proved to be invaluable to everyone involved at the race event. Participants had good feedback about the course, as the skills learnt could be practically applied at real scenarios.

HKJCDPRI will continue to provide similar training opportunities for preparation of emergencies during sports events in Hong Kong. HKJCDPRI hopes that with the experience accumulated this year, the standards of medical support in motor-racing can be enhanced.
