Occupational health is an important topic for health practice. In order to protect health and well-beings, the need to understand the principles of occupational health and prepare for unforeseeable events is rapidly growing. This course will provide the participants with the overview of occupational hazards and health impacts, fundamental of hazards assessment and control. In addition, it will introduce the workplace emergency planning and responses to industrial disasters, as well as the related challenges to occupational health.

We are glad to introduce to you a 1.5 day Training Workshop on Disaster Management on 11 & 18 May 2019 co-organised by the Hong Kong College of Community Medicine and the Hong Kong Jockey Club Disaster Preparedness and Response Institute (HKJCDPRI). The workshop is catered for medical and health professionals, as well as officers and personnel of related disciplines who will be taking a leading or managerial role in disaster preparedness and response.  It aims at conferring participants with practical skills and strategies in improving leadership and communication during health crises and disasters.

In the event of emergencies, all stakeholders are encouraged to have effective plans which aim at mitigating the social and economic disruption of entire communities. Hence broader community engagement is a key to successful disaster risk management and emergency response. However, there has not been an up-to-date summary of the existing evidence on the enablers and barriers to community engagement in this context.   What did the research involve? The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control commissioned a study where Ramsbottom et al. reviewed 35 relevant documents published between 2000-2016.

The Hong Kong Jockey Club Disaster Preparedness and Response Institute (HKJCDPRI) has started a weekly column at the HK01 online news portal since 17 May 2019. Everyone is exposed to disaster risks in any place, at any time. Yet everyone can take actions to reduce their risks and protect themselves. The HKJCDPRI's "Get Preparedness for Disasters 【防災零距離】column will feature stories of past disasters and analyse lessons learned. We will also share with readers useful information and tips to prepare for, respond to and mitigate emergencies. The column articles (only available in Chinese) can be found here:

The Annual Conference on Disaster Preparedness and Response 2019 to be held on 29 June 2019 (Sat) at the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine Jockey Club Building is the fourth of this series of conferences, following previous successful events in with the themes of From Community to Emergency Room in 2015; Building a Resilient Health System in 2016 and Emerging Challenges and Opportunities Ahead in 2018.
