The first Advanced Disaster Response Course (ADRC), organised by the Disaster Medicine Subcommittee of the Hong Kong College of Emergency Medicine and supported by the Hong Kong Jockey Club Disaster Preparedness and Response Institute (HKJCDPRI), commenced in September 2016. The course was held over four days from 24 September to 3 December 2016 with daily theme of discussion, namely, “Urban Humanitarian Emergencies”, “Incident Categorisation”, “Hospital Planning and Response” and “Urban Disasters and the World”.

The Civil Aid Service (CAS) has been organizing annual "Mountaineering Safety Promotion Day " since 2005, to raise public awareness of mountaineering safety. In 2016, HKJCDPRI was invited to join force in this meaningful event.
With contributions from 21 government departments, mountaineering organisations and medical groups, the "Mountaineering Safety Promotion Day 2016” was successfully concluded on 6 November 2016 at Kowloon Park, Tsim Sha Tsui.

The need to communicate risks as accurate as possible in a timely manner arises as much from public expectation as professional need. This free course offers to those interested in disaster medicine a theoretical yet practical framework of effective advocacy and emergency risk communication in an evolving media landscape. Cases ranging from outbreaks to natural disasters in humanitarian settings will be thoroughly discussed throughout the course. The HKJCDPRI Research Grant 2016 was awarded to The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). The research aims to develop a new smart Landslide Information System (LIS) that can improve the planning of access and evacuation routes for emergency responders during intense rainstorms. Furthermore, the LIS aims to provide easily accessible real-time landslide information to the public and to enhance landslide incident reporting in Hong Kong via smart technology.

In July 2017, the Hong Kong Jockey Club Disaster Preparedness and Response Insitute (HKJCDPRI) met with the Hong Kong Geotechnical Engineering Office (GEO) of the Civil Engineering and Development Department (CEDD) to discuss potential in collaboration including identifying ways to improve landslide early warning system and public education to raise awareness of landslide safety.
In July 2017, the Hong Kong Jockey Club Disaster Preparedness and Response Insitute (HKJCDPRI) met with the Hong Kong Geotechnical Engineering Office (GEO) of the Civil Engineering and Development Department (CEDD) to discuss potential in collaboration including identifying ways to improve landslide early warning system and public education to raise awareness of landslide safety.
The University of Science and Technology (UST), our collaborator for the upcoming Research Fund 2017, will contribute to this endeavour. The initiative will serve as a continuity of the previous Research Grant in 2016 where a mobile phone application to provide easily accessible real-time landslide information to the public and to enhance landslide incident reporting in Hong Kong was developed. On 29 September 2017, the HKJCDPRI visited the large-scale flume at the University of Hong Kong Kadoorie Centre where the research will be conducted.
The UST team, led by Prof Clarence Choi, will also collaborate with the GEO to organize talks and field visits to disseminate findings of the research to the public and other relevant practitioners in order to raise awareness of landslide safety.

The Hong Kong Jockey Club Disaster Preparedness and Response Institute (HKJCDPRI) Research Grant 2016 was awarded to the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). The research aims at developing a new smart Landslide Information System (LIS) that can improve the planning of access and evacuation routes for emergency responders during intense rainstorms. Furthermore, the LIS aims to provide easily accessible real-time landslide information to the public and to enhance landslide incident reporting in Hong Kong via smart technology.
The HKUST Research Team has characterised relationships between landslide failure mechanisms and rainfall. Landslide hazard mapping was adopted to verify correlations between rainfall and landslide occurrence. The hazard map will be incorporated into the LIS mobile App which is currently under development (see Figs. 1 and 2 below for snapshots of the mobile App). It is envisioned that the final product will display and disseminate real-time landslide information, provide emergency routing information to emergency responders and identify high-risk landslide areas with the application of the landslide susceptibility model.
Later in October 2017, the HKUST Research Team will attend an international geotechnical conference in Canada (GEO Ottawa 2017) to share their research findings on the LIS mobile application.
This research demonstrates how innovative smart technology can be used as an early warning system and play a major role in reducing risk associated with landslides. More findings and progress on this research will be shared in the coming half year.
