The research entitled “Smart Landslide Information System” led by the research team of the Department of Civil and Engineering of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, in collaboration with the Hong Kong Jockey Club Disaster Preparedness and Response Institute was completed in November 2017.
A hilly terrain and seasonal torrential rainfalls present Hong Kong with the ideal conditions for landslides. With the advent of climate change, the number, scale, spatial extent, and frequency of landslides are expected to be unprecedented. With a comprehensive and world-leading slope safety system in place, there are always opportunities to examine ways to embrace technology and try to further enhance the management of landslide disasters to cope with the dynamic climate conditions that the world is facing.

Housing has been a challenge faced by people from all walks of life in Hong Kong. Many have to turn to improper accommodation with poor living environment, including sub-divided flats, cage homes, bedspace apartment, partitioned rooms or rooftop slump.
Regarding inappropriate accommodation, the major concern is its poor living environment, In addition to cramped living space and unsatisfactory indoor air quality, the potential risks induced by building constructions or design must not be overlooked.

When a disaster happens, many responders may have never experienced anything close to the chaos and unexpected unfolding around them. Virtual Reality (VR) simulation has been recognised as a valuable tool for disaster response training to create unlimited disaster scenarios for training of emergency responders.
The Hong Kong Jockey Club Disaster Preparedness and Response Institute (HKJCDPRI) has been one of the active members in the region in developing VR simulation training for emergency responders in scene coordination and communication. We provide tailor-made training for emergency services and provide advice on the best possible learning environment for using VR simulation.

From 25 to 26 October 2018, we participated in the “Development Plan of Incident Command Training using Virtual Reality (VR) Meeting” which was organised by the Seoul Metropolitan Fire & Disaster Headquarters. The HKJCDPRI sent a delegation of three persons to participate in the event and was invited to speak at the plenary session on Day 1 to share experience in using VR simulation in disaster response training for users from different disciplines. On Day 2 of the event, the HKJCDPRI was invited to speak at the “Meet with the Experts” session to share with participants the practical experience of operating VR simulation training from the scratch of a storyboard. Participants of the meeting were from Hong Kong, the Mainland China, Korea, Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines, the United Kingdom and Portugal.
During the event, the HKJCDPRI shared with participants how the use of VR simulation for emergency response training bridge the gap between paper-based and field-based training. Some other advantages of VR simulation include enhancing immersive virtual environments, facilitating instant feedback on performance, allowing participants to learn at their own pace, and providing unlimited number of virtual scenarios.
Ms Eva Lam, Director of the HKJCDPRI, presented at the plenary session to share with participants the experience of using VR simulation for emergency training for different disciplinary groups.

Despite the advancement in economic development and food technology, there are people living without the basic supply of sufficient and clean foods require for their physiological well-being. The World Food Summit of 1996 defined food security as existing “when all people at all times have access to sufficient, safe, nutritious food to maintain a healthy and active life”. This course introduces the factors affecting the sustainability of the contemporary food systems at both local and global perspectives. Areas including technological advancement, economic drive, political stability, as well as socio-cultural influences will be analyzed critically as insights to tackle the challenge of future food crisis.

On 8 – 12 October 2018, the overseas training fellowship programme “Crisis and Emergency Management Course” organised by the Hong Kong Jockey Club Disaster Preparedness and Response Institute (HKJCDPRI) in collaboration with the Operational Command Training Organisation (OCTO) took place in Manchester, United Kingdom (UK). A delegation of nine participants from the Ambulance Service Institute (Hong Kong Branch), Auxiliary Medical Services, Department of Health, Hospital Authority, Hong Kong College of Emergency Medicine, Hong Kong St John Ambulance and the HKJCDPRI participated in the course.
On 8 – 12 October 2018, the overseas training fellowship programme “Crisis and Emergency Management Course” organised by the Hong Kong Jockey Club Disaster Preparedness and Response Institute (HKJCDPRI) in collaboration with the Operational Command Training Organisation (OCTO) took place in Manchester, United Kingdom (UK). A delegation of nine participants from the Ambulance Service Institute (Hong Kong Branch), Auxiliary Medical Services, Department of Health, Hospital Authority, Hong Kong College of Emergency Medicine, Hong Kong St John Ambulance and the HKJCDPRI participated in the course.
This training is customised to meet the needs of Hong Kong emergency health personnel and targets to enhance knowledge and exposure of participants on surge capacities planning in response to mass casualties and pandemics by learning from UK’s organisations. Topics of the training revolves around all stages of the disaster management cycle, including risk assessment of different hazards; preparing response agencies for emergencies, including exercising and plans; immediate response of the emergency incident; and finally the recovery phase after the emergency.
The training incorporated lecture-based classes, interactive discussion sessions, and also included visits to Aintree University Hospital, a designated regional Major Trauma Centre for the North West within the Major Trauma Centre Collaborative; the Manchester Airport emergency management facilities; Transport for Greater Manchester; and the Manchester Arena.
During the course, participants shared their experiences and opinions on dealing with overwhelming medical emergency with the UK health professionals and emergency management professionals and came to a further understanding on emergency planning and management.
