Silence Limited (龍耳)Fire Preparedness and Response Workshop cum Forum on Disabilities Inclusive Management Disaster preparedness tools (e.g. visual fire alarm for early warning) and education was found to be lacking or non-accommodative for people with hearing impairment in Hong Kong. Therefore, HKJCDPRI collaborated with the Silence (龍耳) to conduct fire drills and produce sign-language videos on fire evacuation, in order to enhance their awareness and knowledge. We also engaged key stakeholders in the “Forum on Disaster Preparedness for People with Disabilities”, to mobilize wider audiences (especially those from/work with the disability sector) to join hands in community resilience enhancement.

Since 2018, the HKJCDPRI has been collaborating with the Fire Services Department and became one of the co-organisers of the “Use the Ambulance Service Properly” Roving Exhibition. The event brought disaster preparedness messages through exhibitions and game booths to participant from different districts. The exhibition on 5 January (Sat) at the Wind Tower Park in Ap Lei Chau kicked-off the series in 2019.

The Hong Kong Jockey Club Disaster Preparedness and Response Institute (HKJCDPRI) has been collaborating with NGOs and schools since 2016, to design and deliver “Community Campaign on Disaster Resilience” based on the threats identified to be relevant to the locality and features of the communities, to promote awareness and knowledge on disaster preparedness.

The first three years of the HKJCDPRI establishment project has started a journey of achieving our ultimate goal as fostering Hong Kong as a prepared community to disasters. We built a learning platform for the Hong Kong community and the path has gained its momentum. Joining hands with working partners, we have reached over 30,000 individuals in the professional sector, academic sector, NGOs and the general public via a wide range of educational and capacity building activities.

All resources listed here are freely and publicly available. We ask users to use them with respect and credit the authors as appropriate. You may have to log onto DPRI’s Moodle Platform in order to access some of the materials.

The free short course “Research Methodology for Disaster and Medical Humanitarian Response” (31 May 2019; 1 June; and optional 5 Jun 2019) is organised by the Jockey Club School of Public Health and Primary Care (JCSPHPC), and Collaborating Centre for Oxford University and CUHK for Disaster and Medical Humanitarian Response (CCOUC) of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and the Hong Kong Jockey Club Disaster Preparedness and Response Institute (HKJCDPRI).

On 13-15 March, the Hong Kong Jockey Club Disaster Preparedness and Response Institute (HKJCDPRI) participated in the Fourth Global Summit of Research Institutes for Disaster Risk Reduction (4th GSRIDRR) under the theme of “Increasing the Effectiveness and Relevance of our Institutes”, organised by the Global Alliance of Disaster Research Institutes (GADRI) and held at the Disaster Prevention Research Institute (DPRI), Kyoto University, Japan.
