In July 2017, the Hong Kong Jockey Club Disaster Preparedness and Response Insitute (HKJCDPRI) met with the Hong Kong Geotechnical Engineering Office (GEO) of the Civil Engineering and Development Department (CEDD) to discuss potential in collaboration including identifying ways to improve landslide early warning system and public education to raise awareness of landslide safety.

Aiming at providing accessible real-time landslide information to the public and leverage smart technology to enhance landslide incident reporting in Hong Kong, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology is developing a new smart Landslide Information System (LIS), which will be supported by the Hong Kong Jockey Club Disaster Preparedness and Response Institute Research Grant 2016.
The research team consisted of three prominent scholars including Prof Clarence Choi, Research Assistant Professor from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (Principal Investigator), Prof Qian Zhang, Chair Professor from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering and Prof Charles Ng, Chair Professor from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.

Hong Kong Delegation's Participation in Exercise Centum, a Simulated Mass Casualty Incident in Perth
On 16-17 May 2018, Hong Kong Jockey Club Disaster Preparedness and Response Institute (HKJCDPRI) led a 6-people Hong Kong delegation to observe and participate in the emergency exercise, Exercise Centum, conducted by the Western Australian Department of Health Disaster Preparedness and Management Unit and Emergency Operations Centre of eight metropolitan hospitals. The simulated terror attack was conducted on 17 May as a functional exercise with the aim of enhancing emergency preparedness and joint response during a crisis. The exercise will also assess emergency services' capacity to manage casualty surge during a multi-agency response.

The 10th commemoration of the 2008 Wenchuan Earthquake is just around the corner. While it is painstaking to commemorate such an agonizing incident, it also serves to remind us of the devastating disaster risks and the importance of preparing for emergencies.
On 9-13 April 2018, the Hong Kong Jockey Club Disaster Preparedness and Response Institute (HKJCDPRI), the University of Manchester Humanitarian and Conflict Response Institute World Health Organisation (WHO) Collaborating Centre on Emergency Medical Teams (EMTs) and Emergency Capacity Building and the Sichuan University West China Hospital (WCH) collaborated to organize a pre-deployment training for WCH, with the aims of reaching the WHO EMT minimum standards.

In the training, the WCH EMT simulated a deployment mission, where they had to build their field hospitals in a disaster scene. All team members, including medical staff, leaders and logisticians had to deal with a mass surge of casualty in the simulation. The field hospital is equipped to provide services for outpatient, surgeries, inpatient, laboratory testing and rehabilitation, etc. and can be self-sufficient in a disaster for several weeks.
Since 2016, the HKJCDPRI, the University of Manchester Humanitarian and Conflict Response Institute WHO Collaborating Centre on EMTs, and the National Health and Family Planning Commission of the People's Republic of China (NHFPC) Health Emergency Response Office have been collaborating to develop the capacity of the Chinese national EMTs for national and international deployment.
Both classroom-based teaching and field learning was incorporated into the training.

Every summer, Hong Kong is faced with multiple typhoons and excessive rainfall, consequently inducing landslides, increasing potential disaster threats. Prevention of landslides is the best way to combat such natural phenomenon.

We have a piece of good news to share with you all! A research project jointly organized by Hong Kong Jockey Club Disaster Preparedness and Response Institute (HKJCDPRI), The Geotechnical Engineering Office (GEO) of the Civil Engineering and Development Department (CEDD) of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) is currently underway to carry out a pilot test for a smart landslide barrier system. The impact switch uses a simple, energy-saving design. If successful, it will be one of the first successful applications to provide critical real-time detection of landslide impact and even serve as an early-warning system to downstream facilities.
In order to understand more about the upcoming research on a Smart Landslide Barrier system HKJCDPRI visited the large-scale flume model at the Hong Kong Kadoorie Centre on the 29 Sept 2017 to learn more about the research on interaction between landslides and barriers.
