About this webcast

The Annual Conference on Disaster Preparedness and Response 2015: From Community to Emergency Room was held from 30th October to 1st November, 2015 at the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine. The Conference was co-organised by the Hong Kong Jockey Club Disaster Preparedness and Response Institute (HKJCDPRI) and the Hong Kong College of Emergency Medicine (HKCEM). The Conference successfully brought together a wide range of stakeholders including government representatives, healthcare professionals, NGO practitioners, and academics working in the field of disaster preparedness and response.

The HKJCDPRI would like to share with you some highlights of the conference in webcasts.

What you will hear

The UK has established registers of health professionals, the UK International Emergency Trauma Register (UKIEMR), drawn largely, but not exclusively from the NHS, willing to deploy to sudden onset disasters and emergencies overseas. Members have full health screening, full insurance, medical indemnity, vaccinations and training that includes a pre-deployment course and an austere environment course relevant to their specialty. The register is a national asset and NGOs from anywhere can draw upon its members. It also provides the healthcare staff to the UK Emergency Medical Team, the national team that responds on behalf of the UK Government as a collaborative effort between the Department for International Development, Save the Children, Handicap International and UK-Med. Development to date, including recent deployments, and immediate and future plans will be described. This initiative in the UK supports the work of the Foreign Medical Teams Office at the World Health Organization which will also be described.
