Latest News and Updates (Scroll down for English version)

1. Coronavirus Outbreak Situation Highlights

- High risk of transmission among family members was found. Novel coronavirus cases exceed SARS in 2003.

- Currently, the case fatality rate of the nCoV-2019 remained at 2%. And the case fatality rate for two other infectious diseases caused by other strains of Coronavirus, SARS and MERS, were approximately 10% and 34% respectively.

- From 8 Feb, all people entering Hong Kong from the Mainland, including Hong Kong residents, Mainland residents as well as other visitors, to be subject to mandatory quarantine for 14 days upon their arrival. Details: https://bit.ly/2Swf89F

2. Four Modes of Transmissions found:

- Possible modes of transmission announced by official or research organisations include:

i)  Contact Transmission (confirmed): A person directly or indirectly touches a surface or object contaminated with infectious droplets and then touches his or her mouth, nose, or eyes.

ii) Droplet Transmission (confirmed): Person-to-person contact, via respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes.

iii) Aerosol Transmission (possible): Contact via aerosol containing the virus. Aerosols can be produced by flushing the toilet and some medical procedures such as sputum induction.

iv) Faecal-Oral Transmission (possible): When someone ingests the virus from objects, food, or drinks contaminated by small amounts of stool from an infected person.

** More clinical evidence is required to confirm transmission of novel coronavirus via aerosol and faecal-oral routes.

- Summary of Ways to Prevent Novel Coronavirus:

i) Contact Transmission (confirmed): Always wash your hands especially after touching public installations or equipment, such as door knobs, escalator handrails and elevator control panels.

ii) Droplet Transmission (confirmed): Avoid crowded places. Wear a surgical mask when there is close person-to-person contact (1 – 2 meters).

iii) Aerosol Transmission (possible): Ensure good ventilation. After using toilet, put the lid down before flushing.

iv) Faecal-Oral Transmission (possible): Always wash your hands. Avoid going to public toilets. Put the toilet lid down before flushing the toilet.

**  To prevent spread of virus through drainage pipes, pour half a litre of water into each drain outlet at home once or more per week.
