Annual Conference on Disaster Preparedness and Response 2019 Held on 29 June 2019

The Annual Conference on Disaster Preparedness and Response 2019 with the theme of “Reduce Risks · Build Resilience” was successfully held on 29 June 2019 at the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine Jockey Club Building. The 2019 Annual Conference is the fourth in this series of conferences, following previous successful events in with the themes of From Community to Emergency Room in 2015; Building a Resilient Health System in 2016; and Emerging Challenges and Opportunities Ahead in 2018.

 

Two keynote speakers, Mr Michael Berkowitz, President of 100 Resilient Cities of Rockefeller Foundation, and Mr Zhang Shaobiao, Vice President of Shenzhen Urban Public Safety and Technology Institute, kicked off the scientific programme of the day. The two speakers shared their tremendous experience from a global and China practice of building urban resilience.

 

A range of concurrent scientific sessions followed. Topics included Climate Change and Disaster Risks, Crisis and Emergency Risk Communications, Disaster Risk Financing and Transfer, Mass Casualty Management, Innovations and Health Emergency & Disaster Risk Management. The Conference was ended by a round table discussion session on multi-sectoral efforts to build resilience. The round table session brought together experts from different sectors, namely, the Civil Engineering and Development Department, the Hong Kong Fire Services Department, Hong Kong Polytechnic University, the Hong Kong Red Cross, the Peak Re Company and the 100 Resilience Cities of the Rockefeller Foundation, to examine the topic and discuss how resilience could be enhanced by stronger collaboration. 

 

Apart from the main scientific conference on 29 June, the pre-conference workshop titled “Use of Big Data and Social Media in Time of Crisis” and the post-conference visit to the Hong Kong Observatory Headquarters were organised on 28 June and 30 June respectively.

 

The Conference successfully engaged a wide spectrum of stakeholders from different sectors, attracting more than 300 participants.
