Free Short Course on "Research Methodology for Disaster and Medical Humanitarian Response"

The free short course “Research Methodology for Disaster and Medical Humanitarian Response” (31 May 2019; 1 June; and optional 5 Jun 2019) is organised by the Jockey Club School of Public Health and Primary Care (JCSPHPC), and Collaborating Centre for Oxford University and CUHK for Disaster and Medical Humanitarian Response (CCOUC) of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and the Hong Kong Jockey Club Disaster Preparedness and Response Institute (HKJCDPRI).

 

Participants will receive technical training in research study to address public health needs of populations affected by catastrophic events and in resource-poor settings. On completing the course, the participants will understand the principles of planning, implementing and disseminating research in the context of disaster and humanitarian settings. It aims to show how public health and research principles can be applied.

 

The course is designed for Master for Public Health (MPH) students and occasional students. For occasional students, assessment scheme is not required. An attendance of 70% is required for issuance of a Certificate of Attendance.

 

After completing this course, students should be able to:

  1. Gain knowledge about health risk, impact and outcomes associated with various types of disasters.
  2. Understand the rationale and able to identify gaps of research in disaster and humanitarian settings.
  3. Acquire the skills to plan, prepare, implement, monitor and evaluate research to examine health impacts of disasters and conflicts; taking into account ethical issues and the context.
  4. Comprehend research techniques and able to critically appraise research literature related to disaster and humanitarian settings.
  5. Understand the requirements to publish and disseminate research findings to various levels of audience.

  1. Introduction to research in disasters and humanitarian settings
  2. Research preparation & planning
  3. Quantitative field research methods for needs assessment and surveillance
  4. Qualitative research
  5. Disseminate and apply research result

What are the criteria for application?

  • ​Holder of a bachelor degree
  • Competent in English (the course will be taught in English with interactive discussion throughout the lectures)
