Targeted for aircrew officers, air medical officers and air medical nursing officers, the first Air Crew Resuscitation Course was completed on 3 December 2016 with six participants. The course provided foundation knowledge and hands-on experience of pre-hospital and helicopter resuscitation in a simulated environment.
The Hong Kong Jockey Club Disaster Preparedness and Response Institute (HKJCDPRI) supported the Hong Kong College of Anaesthesiologists and Government Flying Service (GSF) for better training effect by developing 360-degree virtual reality films and a helicopter cockpit mock-up.

Innovative Learning
Innovative teaching methodologies such as simulation, virtual reality and game-based techniques are becoming increasingly popular for disaster preparedness and response training. We design different creative ways to enhance outcomes of learning in disaster preparedness and response.
Virtual Reality (VR) simulation is one of the methodologies we are using to enhance learning impact. We use VR simulation to advance practice and sustain learning outcomes of disaster training. VR simulation seems to have bridged the gap between paper-based and field-based training, which have been commonly utilised for disaster training. Some other advantages of VR simulation include enhancing immersive virtual environments, facilitating instant feedback on performance, allowing participants to learn at their own pace, and providing unlimited number of virtual scenarios, etc. Our VR tools include a laptop animation-based interactive software and the use of an immersive projection system.
Apart from VR simulation, we use different tools to promote blended learning which is a mixture of learning methods that incorporate multiple teaching modalities to engage learners and drive their learning experience.

The Hong Kong Jockey Club Disaster Preparedness and Response Institute (HKJCDPRI) supported the Hong Kong College of Anaesthesiologists and Government Flying Service (GSF) for better training effect by developing 360-degree virtual reality films and a helicopter cockpit mock-up.
During this full day course, participants were trained in different simulated scenarios to practice resuscitation skills, triage during disasters, airway and cardiovascular management, trauma and burn management, as well as equipment handling for infection control. Debriefing sessions with facilitators were carried out to discuss the simulation and areas for improvement.

Participants were practicing rescue skills with a background scenario simulating a mountain hiking environment, projected by 360-degree virtual reality film.

Partnering with the Hong Kong Automotive Association, HKJCDPRI organised a training "Motorsport Medicine Incident Management Course" for medical incident first responders, involved in the 2016 FIA Formula E Hong Kong Station race event held on 8 and 9 October 2016. Two identical courses were held on 24 September and 1 October 2016 with a participation of 80 medical emergency first responders.
Partnering with the Hong Kong Automotive Association, HKJCDPRI organised a training "Motorsport Medicine Incident Management Course" for medical incident first responders, involved in the 2016 FIA Formula E Hong Kong Station race event held on 8 and 9 October 2016. Two identical courses were held on 24 September and 1 October 2016 with a participation of 80 medical emergency first responders.
The course covered four main areas from trackside care, ambulance care, extended medical care in motorsport medical centre, to command and coordination. Field medical procedures simulation and XVR game-based learning on crisis leadership, decision-making, and communication skills were carried out during the course. Facilities at the Hong Kong Jockey Club Innovative Learning Centre for Medicine (HKJCILCM) including the clinical simulation equipment and eXtreme Virtual Reality (XVR) were used during the training. The Virtual Reality Team of the HKJCILCM also provided support for the scenario design on XVR and during the training .
Due to the complexity of the circuit and relative lack of experience in motor racing medical support in Hong Kong, this pre-event simulation course proved to be invaluable to everyone involved at the race event. Participants had good feedback about the course, as the skills learnt could be practically applied at real scenarios.

HKJCDPRI will continue to provide similar training opportunities for preparation of emergencies during sports events in Hong Kong. HKJCDPRI hopes that with the experience accumulated this year, the standards of medical support in motor-racing can be enhanced.

The course aims to enhance first aiders’ disaster response capacity with updated knowledge and essential practical skills in disaster situations. It covers topics on command and coordination, practical first responders’ practical skills in disaster situations, special situations and scenarios, as well as psychological support.

Apart from lectures, practical skills training was also key part of the course.
